Complaint Trends

When considering a 2018 Toyota Camry, it’s important to research the other model years as well. This helps provide a broader perspective on a car model’s complaint history and potential issues.

Here are a few reasons why:
Understanding the car’s evolution: Car models can undergo significant changes from year to year, both in terms of design and functionality. This knowledge can help you better appreciate the car’s strengths and weaknesses and determine whether the specific year you are considering is the best buy.

Identifying recurring issues: Some car models have recurring issues that may not be apparent in a specific year. By researching the other model years, you can identify any recurring issues that the car may have and determine whether they have been resolved in the specific year you are considering. This knowledge can help you make an informed decision and avoid potential costly repairs down the line.

Overall, researching other Toyota Camry years will help identify the model year with the lowest amount of high severity complaints, further ensuring a better car buying decision.

Timeline of Complaints

The timeline of complaints identifies how many problems owners reported with the 2018 Toyota Camry while covered under the Bumper-to-Bumper and Powertrain warranties.

Seeing how many complaints have been filed for a car while it is still under warranty can be beneficial in several ways:

  • Indicates reliability: If a vehicle has a high volume of high severity complaints filed while still under warranty, it may indicate that the car is not reliable. This information can be valuable for a car shopper who is looking for a car that will be dependable and require minimal repairs.
  • Helps identify potential issues: By researching the complaints filed for a particular model, a car shopper can get an idea of the common issues that owners face with the vehicle.
  • Can influence warranty coverage negotiations: If you have a 2018 Toyota Camry and your warranty claim for expensive repairs is rejected, having a record of similar complaints can increase your chances of getting the defect covered under warranty. In other words, documenting common issues with your vehicle could help you negotiate better warranty coverage.

on Feb 20, 2023, during my evening lunch break about 7:30 pm, I drove my car to a nearby gas station to fill it. As I was attempting to back into place, my brakes froze and a "Low Braking Power" message appears in my dash and my car hit a pole because it would not stop. On Feb 21, 2023, I towed it to our family mechanic who informed me that there was a recall on this issue and to take it to a dealer instead. I had it towed to Temecula Valley Toyota. They offered me a rental car while they repaired the recall issue and sent a request to Toyota to repair the damage to my bumper from the loss of brake performance. I was told there would be no charge because it was a recall. They wanted a deposit of $100 since we only had a debit card not a credit card. on March 8, someone left a message on my voicemail saying Toyota said they were only paying for 2 days and they wanted to let us know they would be charging a substantial amount to our car. This time of the call was 4:48Pm. We called back at 4:55p and got no answer. I immediately checked my bank statement and I had been charged $675. Toyota has had my car since 2-21-23 and no info on its return. Customer Service Relation person called after we did an online complaint with Toyota, and also with a Toyota person at Toyota.com named Matthew. The Customer Relations person who called around 3-18 or 3-19 and said the case was with Toyota Legal. Its 3-28-23 and no information. We want our $675.00 back because we have auto insurance that covers rentals @ $51 per day. We have reported the accident to Farmer's who cannot access our car as long as its at Toyota. We have paid our note and have not had usage of our car and we want that car note returned as well.

Driving on the freeway, cruise control set, a remnant of a large tire was in my lane, I could not avoid hitting it, it caused my car to lose control, drive up on the concrete divider placed by construction crews, came back down to the freeway and hit the back of a semi causing my car to then spin out of control and eventually landing in a ditch. The entire front end of the car was damaged, the car was deemed totaled by the auto repair place. During this incident none of the airbags deployed.

  • Incident Date: June 28, 2022

The entire brake system became inoperative on my 2018 Toyota Camry on two separate occasions causing a near fatal accident and damaged to my property and to the property of the other driver on the road. The first incident occurred on the freeway while I was driving behind another vehicle. As my car approached the other vehicle, I press down on the brake pedal all the way but my car would not slow down or stop but continue to accelerate thus causing me to rear end the other car. My car gave no prior warning that the brake system was malfunctioning. I was deemed by the insurance company as the responsible party for the accident thus my insurance premium was increased. The second incident occurred when I was in a residential area approaching my driveway. The car again failed to stop when I pressed down on the brake pedal. The emergency hand brake did not work either. I had no choice but to shift the car into parking which cause me to hit the curve and only inches away from my garage door. The brake fluid under the hood of my car bursts thus leaking the fluid all over the street and my driveway. Both of these incidents caused my elderly mother and myself great emotional stress and post traumatic symptoms. Prior to this Toyota issued a recall on all 2018 to 2019 Toyota Camry for the potential brake failure. I had to towed my car to the Toyota dealership for repair. It has been over 3 months and Toyota has done nothing to remedy this problem. They claim the parts for the brakes are back order and that there is a shortage of parts everywhere. This is the only answer I get when I call them for an update. I have spoken to the service manager, the customer relation manager and the corporate office but none are willing to assists me to resolve this matter.

I bought my Camry with 5 miles on it. It’s a 2.5L 8 speed Camry SE. immediately I felt something not right when it would shift between 3/4 gear. It would rock back and forth in a jerking motion. The car has trouble shifting in automatic. When putting it into sport mode it automatically starts at 4th geer. It’s as if the gear shifters are not able to communicate with the engine. It’s stall on me when making a turn and I was almost t-boned June of 2018! Finally a recall on the fuel pump. I go take it in immediately to have the recall fix. Upon doing so the mechanic informed me that my vacuum pump seems to be bigger than the one that standard for my car. He said there’s no recall for my vin number but for other cars during that same year there is. So there was nothing I could do but wait for my vin number to be on the recall list. Then In June 2021 I was backing out of a parking spot and there was a truck in my rear cross traffic that was approaching, my Camry sensed the vehicle with it sonar sensor the alert went off and my braking assistance worked accordingly but the system failed to get the Communication clearly to the engine which in return did not slow down the acceleration of the throttle. So I backed into a truck and my son and myself were in the vehicle. No airbags were dispensed. No injuries but damages to my trunk lid, tail light, brake light and number were damaged. My car now has airbag malfunction and the steering assistance is working correctly.

1st Occurance: Approaching stop sign getting off freeway and brake pedal was hard to depress and brakes slow to work, pulled emergency brake to stop vehicle just in time. No warning lights, no squeaking brakes or grinding noises. We had a long drive approximately 4-5 hours freeway with 1 hour stop before reaching our destination where this occurred. 2nd occurance: Next day in city traffic driving 35-40mph. Noticed brakes getting less effective with each use eventually having to use emergency brake as main brake. Still no lights or noises from vehicle. Pulled over and called Carmax where I financed and had MaxCare to make an appt for brakes to be fixed and diagnosed. Appt was made for a week or so out and in the meantime, driving home to park the vehicle… 3rd and last occurrence:(same day) while approaching a traffic light, the brake pedal was depressed but failed to stop the vehicle. No brake warning light. No dashboard warning lights on at all. The brake pedal was depressed to the floorboard to stop the vehicle and vehicle did not stop. Pumped the brake pedal a few times and still nothing. Vehicle ended up getting deemed totaled by insurance. Also note: the airbags did not deploy. The accident was a head-on collision with a rock wall going 40-45mph. Seatbelts fastened. Passenger was dazed from hitting head during accident and bleeding. Right leg received a 7 in cut which is now a knurly 3-4 inch scar. I was left carless and basically homeless with no where to stay in an unknown city for weeks until I was able to purchase a bus ticket home. Due to being stuck 6 hours away from home and carless I lost my job. My life has been completely turned upside down and my mental health is continuing to decline. I am unable to take kids to school or sports as well as the park for simple family quality time.

I have had issues with the breaks since I purchased the vehicle. The first recall I got the vacuum pump replaced. I still have the same issue. I have been having the break issue but recently had an issue slamming on my breaks after someone was coming around the corner too fast in my garage and feeling pushback from the break petal and not breaking fully. I actually did hit her care but she only had scratches and decided not to file a claim (I have the date and pictures as well). I bought this Camry feeling confident and I actually worry about my breaks I even got them replaced thinking they were worn out but I still have the same issue.

I was rear ended when I was braking hard to avoid hitting a dog in the street (where I live you can be sued for running over/injuring a dog). My car speed was about 10 mph give or take, and I was rear ended by a distracted driver (who admitted to using antidepressants on a daily basis) who I believe was going at least 45 mph. My car was pushed forward at least 6 ft and no airbags were deployed. I thought I died because I saw a flash of bright light enveloping my entire vision while my chest and forehead were whipped forward harshly and almost touched my steering wheel. My whiplash injuries are moderately severe and have actually put a few discs along my entire spine and cervical area off-center, continuing to cause extreme back/neck pain and discomfort. I have sharp intermittent pain in my head as well. Had the airbags went off from the steering wheel I strongly believe I would not be in this much pain, having to take time off work to seek treatment a few times a week. I am confused as to why the airbags did not deploy when my car was crashed into behind at such a high speed when viewing footage. Had this happened on the freeway I have no doubt I would be dead from a broken neck or in the hospital as a 'living vegetable' from a cracked spine. Toyota should be making airbag deployment in all types of accidents a priority. Individuals are just as prone to sustaining life threatening injuries when rear ended as during a frontal collision.

VEHICLE HAD AN UNINTENTIONAL BRAKING INCIDENT RELATED TO THE FACTORY SAFETY SYSTEMS WHICH CAUSED PROPERTY DAMAGE. OF CONCERN IS THAT ACCORDING TO THE MANUFACTURER WHO READ THE EDR, THERE WAS NO RECORDED EVENT THEREFORE THEY ARE DENYING THAT AN UNINTENTIONAL BRAKING EVENT OCCURRED. I WAS NOT PRESENT AT THE DEALERSHIP WHEN THEY DOWNLOADED THE DATA HOWEVER THEY LEFT A THUMB DRIVE IN THE CAR WHICH ALLEGEDLY CONTAINS THE DATA THEY PULLED FROM THE CAR. WHEN THE EVENT OCCURRED, THE CAR WAS ON THE TRACK OF AN AUTOMATIC CAR WASH BEING PUSHED ALONG BY ROLLERS UNDER THE WHEELS WHILE IN NEUTRAL. THE SPEED WAS LIKELY 2-3 MPH. WHEN THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE WENT UNDER A CURTAIN OF SWAYING CLOTH STRIPS, ALARMS WENT OFF IN THE VEHICLE, LARGE ILLUMINATED LETTERS THAT SAID BRAKE APPEARED IN THE INSTRUMENT DISPLAY, IT BRAKED BY ITSELF CAUSING IT TO COME OFF OF THE TRACK ROLLERS AND THE CONVEYER PULLED THE VEHICLE BEHIND INTO THE REAR OF MY VEHICLE CAUSING DAMAGE TO BOTH VEHICLES. THE OWNERS MANUAL LISTS AUTOMATIC CAR WASH AS A SITUATION WHEN THE SYSTEM MAY ACTIVATE (ALONG WITH PASSING OTHER VEHICLES, GOING UNDER HIGHWAY SIGNS AND ABOUT 20 OTHER COMMON EVERYDAY SITUATIONS WHERE ONE WOULD BE UNABLE TO DEACTIVATE THE SYSTEMS PRIOR TO THE SITUATION). THE OWNERS MANUAL DOES NOT TELL YOU TO DISABLE THE SYSTEM WHEN IN AN AUTOMATIC CAR WASH. TOYOTA DENIES ANY LIABILITY DUE TO THE EDR NOT RECORDING THE EVENT ALTHOUGH THEY IDENTIFIED THAT IT WOULD AND SHOULD HAVE IF IT OCCURRED. THERE CLEARLY IS A PROBLEM WITH THE EDR RECORDING PROPERLY IF IT IS NOT RECORDING WHAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO. THE DATA ON THE THUMB DRIVE IS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. THE DEALER IDENTIFIED WHEN THE CLAIM WAS FILED THAT TOYOTA HAS A UNIT DEDICATED SPECIFICALLY TO UNINTENTIONAL BRAKING, SAME AS THEY DO FOR THE UNINTENTIONAL ACCELERATION PROBLEMS THEIR VEHICLES EXPERIENCED SO CLEARLY THEY ARE AWARE OF POTENTIAL PROBLEMS. *TR

The contact owns a 2018 Toyota Camry. The contact stated while driving at 55 MPH, the brake pedal was depressed but the brakes failed to slow the vehicle down. The contact mentioned that both feet were used to depress the brake pedal however the vehicle failed to stop. An unknown brake-related warning light illuminated. As a result, the contact crashed into a vehicle and that vehicle crashed into another causing a 3 vehicle collision. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was filed. The contact's mother sustained seat belt injuries, neck, thoracic, chest bruising, knee, and neck bruising. The contact had x-rays on her two feet due to bruising that occurred when depressing the brake pedal aggressively during the failure. Both the contact and her mother sought medical treatment at a hospital. The contact's sister had neck injuries and the contact's niece sustained arm injuries but both did not seek medical attention. The vehicle's hood was damaged and was strapped down in order to drive the vehicle to the contact's residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired for the brake failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and it was informed that there was a recall related to the brakes. The failure mileage was 53,000.

The contact owns a 2018 Toyota Camry. The contact stated while his father was driving and making a right turn into the driveway at his residence, the brake pedal was depressed however, the vehicle failed to slow down causing the driver to crash into the closed garage door. The vehicle went through the garage door and only stopped after crashing into the inside garage wall. The contact stated that there were skid marks on the floor in the garage. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle was damaged. The vehicle was inspected by several friends with automotive knowledge however, a determination was not made as to the cause of the failure. The driver was taken to the Emergency Room for minor contusions to the face and lower back pain. The CT scan showed no major injury or broken bones. There was no police report filed. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle remained inside the garage with the garage door not fully functionable. The contact became aware of NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V890000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic) after researching online however, the VIN was not included. The contact was also concerned that the Forward Collision Avoidance System failed to operate as designed. The contact stated that there was a prior failure several months ago while his father was making a right turn and attempting to stop the vehicle; however, the vehicle failed to stop and rear-ended the vehicle in front. There were no injuries to either drivers. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and the vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and informed of the failure and a case was filed. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 33,000.

Since I have purchased this vehicle when it first came out, I have noticed that the steering is very stiff, particularly when driving along curvy, windy roads (ex. certain freeway exits/entrances that require you to follow along a curve). I did not realize how stiff the steering wheel was until I was forced to get a rental car following several car accidents over the course of 2 years. At times the steering was so stiff I actually almost dislocated my shoulder joints several times, or tore muscles/ligaments deep within my shoulder which would take at least a month to fully heal. Other cars I have driven (including a 2019 Toyota Sienna AWD have excellent steering fluidity and show no signs of stiffness). I understand that this "stiffness" is a safety feature (Anti-Lock steering) but there needs to be a way to lessen the stiff feeling as for individuals with weaker joints like me this can cause pain and injury and temporary immobility.

TOYOTA RETURNED MY CAR AND THE AREA STILL HEATED UP AND SMOKED. I TOOK IT UPON MYSELF TO REMOVE THE HOUSING BEHIND THE REAR VIEW MIRROR AND FOUND THAT THE METAL CAMERA WAS OVER HEATING AND CAUSING THE PLASTIC HOUSING TO MELT (PICTURES ATTACHED). I UNPLUGGED THE CAMERA AND THE SAFETY ISSUE IS RESOLVED. HOWEVER, THAT CAMERA CONTROLS THE ANTI-COLLISION SYSTEM AND MY AUTOMATIC HEADLIGHTS.

Since we bought the vehicle new in late 2018, in hot weather we sometimes see gas running down the side of the car below the filler pipe door, and a little puddle of gas on the rubber just inside the filler pipe door. We can't park the car in our garage because of the gas fumes, and we worry that in a collision, the underlying cause could make a fire more likely. We've had the car to the dealer service department and they can't find a cause. I know from a www search that other Camry owners have had the same problem. The dealership wants us to leave the car with them long enough for them to observe the problem, but we can't handle the financial risk of the service and the car rental while our car is at the garage being monitored for the problem. And of course it is a waste of time trying to get Toyota to take responsibility, which is why we're writing to you. The date entered in this submission is the first time we noticed it (it was the first hot weather since we bought the car).

Subject: Concerns Regarding TSB T-SB-0017-23 for Toyota Camry HV Vehicles Dear NHTSA, I am deeply concerned about the recently released Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) T-SB-0017-23 by Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc. This TSB addresses a potential issue with the active grille air shutter actuator in specific 2018-2020 Camry HV vehicles equipped with the A25A-FXS engine. Releasing the TSB in April 2023, after the warranty periods for many affected vehicles have expired, is unfair to owners. A 2018 Camry HV's warranty period of 36 months/36,000 miles ended in 2021. This situation raises significant concerns as it burdens owners with the financial responsibility of repairs for an issue that was not their fault, potentially compromising safety if repairs are not promptly carried out. Toyota's inadequate efforts to ensure all affected owners have access to necessary repairs are disheartening. I urgently appeal for a thorough investigation and decisive action to ensure that regardless of warranty status, all owners of affected Camry HV vehicles can obtain essential repairs. I would like to bring attention to a similar TSB, T-SB-0319-17, issued by Toyota in November 2017 for Prius Prime 2017 and 2016-2017 models. This TSB addressed a comparable issue with the active grille air shutter actuator. Toyota extended the warranty for affected vehicles in California by 180 months or 150,000 miles, aligning with the manufacturing year and ensuring all vehicles were covered. The repair was covered under the California Emission Warranty for specific states. The discrepancy in approach between the two TSBs raises concerns about the fairness and consistency of Toyota's actions. It is crucial for Toyota to extend similar warranty coverage for affected Camry HV vehicles, ensuring all owners have access to necessary repairs without financial hardship. Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I urge prompt action in addressing these concerns.

I started getting weird shifting and hesitation I had around 70,000 miles took it to my local Toyota dealership, they completed several software updates. Also did a transmission fluid change that didn’t really resolve the problem now at about 113,000 miles I started getting odd shifting, and at higher speeds, when accelerating abruptly, the vehicle put itself in limp mode and will not accelerate further. Add 115,000 miles I took the vehicle into the Toyota dealership because the check engine light came on after accelerating onto the highway and the vehicle stalling and upon their investigation they found out that I would be needing a new transmission which is a little odd at 115,000 miles with the car only be five years old. Toyota, you should do better.

It is highly likely that brake lights were also not working intermittently. Vehicle only had 20K miles and I assume it came from Factory with the switch nut installed up-side-down. This condition allows the brake switch to be misaligned.

I was driving on the freeway down a hill and when I went to press on the brakes they did not do anything and I had the pedal all the way down. I had to pump the brakes putting me and my passengers in danger. The engine hesitates when accelerating. I took it in twice already and they don't know what the issue is. Once it finally decides to go it accelerates excessively putting the driver in danger. This has been going in for years.

The car’s dashboard will light up and all systems started failing with no warning while driving. The car will not accelerate, brake, or steer properly. It happened twice and the Toyota mechanics couldn’t figure out what was happening and just tried changing something out on the engine. A few months later the same thing happened again (today). This is very dangerous as I have no control when it happens and I can’t control the car. In all instances, I was driving on a busy road, the entire dash lit up, I couldn’t accelerate despite pushing it all the way down with my foot, and I couldn’t steer the car. Luckily, I was able to get off the road before I was in an accident.

After continued usage steering becomes stiff and turning becomes very difficult. This then possess a safety risk to not only the driver but other drivers. The cause is failure of the intermediate steering shaft. Toyota has recalled 170,000+ 2018 Camrys because of this - https://www.tsbsearch.com/Toyota/22TE02, but it is clear as per my incident and other online forums, there are 2018 Carmys that have not been recalled where the intermediate steering shaft fails without notice. When the dealership was called, they said they were well aware of the problem and stated they would order the part even before my car was taken to the shop, even though the repair was not covered under my VIN. The dealership replaced the intermediate steering shaft at a cost to me. There were no warning lights or other symptoms prior to the failure. The failure first appeared around March 27th, 2023.

on Feb 20, 2023, during my evening lunch break about 7:30 pm, I drove my car to a nearby gas station to fill it.

The a25a-fks engine fails to idle properly and will stall at times due to a cylinder imbalance. ICS malfunction light comes on as well. This puts other people at risk because a vehicle stalling or malfunction of the Toyota Safety Sense system can lead to car accident. Vehicle was taken to two independent mechanics and couldn’t find the root of the problem. Was told to go to a Toyota Dealership. A Toyota dealership inspected the vehicle, done several tests, swapped computer modules and couldn’t find the cause. The dealership replaced fuel injectors, fuel pump and had done a cleaning on the intake and the vehicle still had the trouble code. 4K worth of work and the vehicle still persisted with the issue. What I first noticed from the car was an odd knocking noise when starting the car, followed by excessive white smoke at idle, parking sensors not working, the car improperly starting for the first time followed by a ICS Malfunction, blinking parking sensor icon and check engine light. Code: P219C. The dealership wants to charge me 10K to take the engine apart to either replace a faulty part (within the engine) or putting in a new engine all together. Several recalls for Toyota Camrys from 2018 and 2020 have sighted defects with the engine blocks causing white smoke and stalling. These recalls should be extended to more manufacturing months as this is a noticeable flaw.

Transmission issues car will not accelerate and then will abruptly speed up. The vehicle will stall at 15 mph and then shift and shake. The safety of driver put at risk while on the road because the car would go from 15 mph to 40 mph and traffic following behind could potentially rear end vehicle. Dealership inspected vehicle and informed Camry will need new transmission, no warranty left, current mileage only 69,500. No warning lamps, messages, or symptoms prior to failure. The vehicle was serviced at Toyota late December and no transmission issues indicated. The vehicle was purchased new directly from Toyota dealership. The vehicle should not have transmission issues with mileage of only 69,500. Toyota has failed consumers enormously with the 2018 Camry SE model.

Purchased this 2018 Toyota Camry SE from DCH Wappingers Falls Toyota as a "Certified Pre-owned Vehicle". During early periods of ownership, the transmission noticeably experienced hard, jerking shifts during acceleration and de-acceleration between the first several gears of this 8-speed automatic transmission. The vehicle was brought back to the selling Toyota dealer where they said the transmission's performance was within spec and this was "normal" for this transmission. The most recent return for the transmission problem was April 2022 where the service advisor at the selling Toyota dealership stated their mechanic confirmed both that the vehicle received the software update issued by one of Toyota's TSB's (Technical Service Bulletin) which addressed owners/complainants' reports of hard shifting, and they confirmed the transmission had the proper level of fluid. It was noted there is no dipstick to check transmission fluid and I was informed this has to be done by a mechanic with the car on a lift from underneath the Camry. On Friday evening 09/24/2002, while driving Camry, the transmission began to stutter andsoon failed to engage ANY of it's gears and when pressing on the accelerator, the engine would Rev with increased RPM's, but the vehicle would not move. It had to be towed back to the DCH Wappingers Falls Toyota Dealership where it is currently parked with an inoperable transmission awaiting a diagnosis for either repair -o- replacement.

I was driving down the road on interstate at 70 mph and my 2018 Toyota Camry SE warning message steering power low alarm and one to two seconds later my steering wheel pulled violently to the right barely missing truck in right lane by inches. I was in center lane. I was fortunate it was not rush hour and no vehicles were in back of the truck in his right lane where the car was steered. Toyota dealer was approximately one mile and half way. I went to the far right emergency lane driving slowly and arrive at dealer. Service manager drove the car around the parking lot and said I had steering failure and will need to replace rack and pinion parts. The car had approximately 30,500 miles only. I am fortunate my car was at the rear of the truck back tires when this happened. This is was a very close near miss. Toyota has been of no help in this matter wanting me to pay $3700 dollars for repairs. A set of tires last longer than this rack and pinion. How safe can a car be if you can not reply on your steering.?

When vehicle is stopped from slow speeds, the car lurches to a stop because the brakes grab much harder than the pressure being applied to the brake pedal would indicate. These touchy brakes can alarm passengers in the vehicle and pedestrians near the vehicle causing them to be frightened that the vehicle hit something. Toyota developed a fix for this problem which is described by T-SB-0033-20 but the fix was not published until 4/8/20 (less than 6 months before my 36 month warranty expired) and was only applicable to vehicles in warranty so when I discovered the fix, my car was out of warranty and Toyota refuses to perform the fix at no charge.

For the past few months I have experienced a sudden loss of power while driving on the freeway and/or while attempting to accelerate. The car will stall, lose power, the engine will rev but not propel the car. I took my vehicle to the dealership twice before they acknowledged that there was an active recall and kept my vehicle for 2 months before calling me and telling me my car was fixed and returning it to me. I drove the car for about a month before it started doing the exact same thing and suddenly losing power as I was driving on the freeway. I took it back to the dealership and was told that the recall part they fixed (that took 2 months) was for safety recall #21TA09 "Sudden loss of power braking assist" and that the Toyota 2018-19 fuel pump defect recall #20TA02 announced in January of 2020 and ultimately effecting approximately 3.34 million vehicles did not apply to my specific VIN # even though it applies to the year, make, model and issue that I am having. This is a serious safety issue and I am gravely concerned about my own safety and that of any potential passengers I may have in my vehicle. I would like to know what criteria would be necessary to have equitable application of the recall extended to my vehicle (VIN #).

When I got home from work in the early evening, I discovered my rear windshield was completely shattered but it is still together. On my way home, I noticed that I could not see thru my rear windshield and didn't think of it much because we had some rain today and I live in a high humidity city. I turned my rear windshield defroster ON hoping it will clear it but it did not. I turned it OFF and thought to myself maybe the poor visibility was due to dirt accumulation on the windshield after the rain. When I finally got home, I was shocked to discover the rear glass windshield had completely shattered with few pieces had fallen off from all four corners and some from the edges. I immediately started looking for any sign of any object that might have struck the glass and caused the breakage like a rock or hail from the rain earlier, I could not find any. There was no indentations or depression in the glass that would indicate that anything had struck it while it was parked in an open parking lot all day long at a secure site or while driving back home.

Abrupt activation of brakes: new vehicle to present. When first backing out of garage or parking spot, at a slow-creeping speed, without use of throttle pedal, attempting to control backward motion with light brake pedal the vehicle's brakes will abruptly active fully halting rearward motion. Further rearward motion requires driver to completely remove foot from brake pedal but any attempt to control rearward speed by feathering brake pedal often causes a repeat of the abrupt brake activation. This cycle repeats the full length of the vehicle within the garage and the length of the driveway to the street , additionally 5 to 6 times the vehicle length. The problem manifests after a lengthy parking, in both forward and reverse directions. There is often an accompanying discernible mechanical actuator sound coming from the engine compartment that I associate as a Trigger to expect the abrupt braking. The obstacle warning may alarm in the garage but acknowledging it with OK does not effect the abrupt braking cycle which continues the length of the driveway, clear of any obstructions. To be clear, this problem occurs at very slow speeds, about 2 miles per hour. I have been told by the dealership mechanic that the brakes are designed to operate as conventional hydraulic brakes below 5 mph; this of course doesn't explain the actuator noise emanating from under the hood. Once the vehicle has been on the road, the brake's performance improves with only a slight tendency to grab when coming to a stop; It's cause to celebrate when the driver can successively make 5 smooth stops. This problem was experienced by 5 separate drivers, each of whom directly expressed dis-satisfaction. Possibly related to the abrupt braking described above is the sudden activation of the brakes and BRAKE warning in what would otherwise be a controlled stop behind a stopped vehicle at a red traffic light. There an association with: vehicle size -color- brake lite position/intensity.

All of the warning notifications keep going off. I have been to the dealership 3 times paid for a battery replacement and battery terminal replacement. I was quoted a ridiculous rate for a engine wiring harness replacement, I had to get that replaced by a certified technician but the car is still doing the same thing. I am starting to feel like I was sold a lemon.

We have owned this vehicle since new. Fuel leaks out of the fuel cap when the car is parked overnight. It doesn't matter if the Fuel tank is full or not. When I push the fuel door release button in the car I can hear fuel flowing back to the tank. The leak does not always happen. But it has been happening for at least 2 years. I discussed this with the Toyota dealer and they said it would be $140.00 an hour to look at it. I feel that the fuel pipe and fuel cap are both emission items and should be covered. I also feel this is a possible fire hazard if it starts to leak worse. I have noticed several other people posting this identical problem on line, so I am not imagining things. Its easy for you or Toyota to say take it too your dealer. The way things are going today with shortages of parts and lack of personnel I am nervous about multiple dealer visits before the problems as found

Brake booster failed 1 yr ago. At that time, I was told my car does not qualify for the recall because of the VIN batch. So repairs were made out of pocket. Now, I have a letter from Toyota stating I can get reimbursed for the parts and labor. Great! But when I follow the instructions from the letter to navigate the website, the final instruction states to click on "Submit Reimbursement Request". It does NOT exist. I called and spoke with Toyota, They were unaware of this issue. I'm not sure where to go from here. The repair was over $1600 and I had to hunt down the part myself. Due to the recall demand, local dealers did not have the part. A nightmare. I

Break booster vacuum pump needs to be replaced per the diagnostic at the Toyota dealership. My car would not completely start when I was trying to turn it on. The break pad became stiff, unable to press down and a warning message stated “low breaking power”, therefore the car would not turn on and it became not drivable. If this were to happen while I was driving on the road, not only would it put myself in a lot of danger but others as well due to not being able to break. Even though it is not a part of the 2018 Camry recall batch, it is the exact same issue, therefore it is definitely a manufacturing issue.

Hi there, So I have an open recall for my car and the Toyota Service Center is not helping me to fix this issue, I went there two times for the recall and every time they said we don’t have the part yet, we don’t know when it gonna come, and every time they said we gonna call you when we got the part, which they never do, it’s been a month and I am facing issues while driving, brakes are not good, my car is not catching pickup, it looks like it gonna stop soon. So please help me to fix this recall. It’s been more than 2 weeks when I last visited to the Toyota Service Center. Thank you and have a wonderful day!

I bought a 2018 Toyota Camry XLE in May 2020. One week after purchase, the vehicle stalled minutes after putting gas. The Check Malfunction Indicator Lamp came on, and the vehicle shut off. The vehicle turned on again after approximately 30 minutes. Eight months later I received a recall notice regarding a fuel pump malfunction. Toyota replaced the low-pressure fuel pump in March 2021. In early November 2021, the same Malfunction Indicator Lamp turned on and the car shut off. I restarted the vehicle and it turned back on. On November 30, 2021, I put gas in the vehicle, and after approximately 5 minutes of driving the Malfunction Indicator Lamp turned on and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle wouldn't turn back on until 20 minutes later. The vehicle was taken in for inspection, but no issues were found. The same Malfunction Indicator Lamp and vehicle stalling continue to occur.

There’s been a few times when I started my car to head to work and something appears on the dash board that reads ( Air bag malfunction) Then it’s gives me a hard time to steer the car. This has happened ample times. So when it does happen I have to shut the car off and then turn it back on so that the issue on the dash board disappears. I do this 2 to 3 times until it clears. (Very weird).. Every time it happens it’s when I turn my car on to head out to either go to work or do errands. Etc. But i usually shut the car off immediately when I see that it appears on the dash board. When I do , it usually goes away and I can again take control of the steering wheel and the pressure on the steering wheel go back to being normal and manageable. But I’ve noticed that when it does come on there’s a tremendous change in the steering Ps. It reads …. Airbag malfunction.

My car started to have issues while driving, especially when I slow down. It wants to die while I’m driving or waiting for traffic so I can turn or entering roundabouts. I recently waited for traffic and found myself turning in front of a semi. I had plenty of time, but through my turn realized that if my car had died that semi would have hit me at 45 mph. There are 2 lights on, check engine and master warning light. I have tried to have the issue fixed twice already and it was better for about 20 miles and then I have the same issue. These issues seem identical to the ones as described in the recalls for the same year make and model of my vehicle, but my specific vin is not part of the recall. I am concerned it is also part of the same issue. (It seems to have the same symptoms as the recall for the fuel pump issue or the incorrect sized pistons)

Around 47k miles the steering shaft failed and the vehicle became extremely difficult to steer. The wheel would also not return to center on its own after turning and had to be forced back in order to drive the vehicle straight again. It was almost as if the power steering went out altogether. The dealer was aware of the issue and said that some of the steering column bind and need to be replaced. Causal research such as doing a Google search for "Toyota steering shaft binding" shows that this has been an issue for several years. The fact that the dealer knew about it shows that Toyota is simply ignoring the issue.

The longer I have this car, the more issues arise yearly. When this car was first bought as new I noticed that the car battery would die whenever I didn't drive for a single day. As the years pass the situation just gets worse. Today I was about to drive to work and found to my dismay that the car refuses to start. I couldn't even unlock my car with the key fob buttons, I had to use the key itself to unlock the car door to get in. The trunk refused to open even with the button inside the car, so I had to ONCE AGAIN use my key in the key slot to open. No lights came on when I tried to start the car, usually you can hear the engine struggle to start but not this time. After I had it jumpstarted the engine made a truly weird and strange sound, like rattling but much more higher pitched. Engine also sounded very weak too, much higher pitched than usual, almost like it was going to fade out of power. I have not changed the battery for a bit over 4 years. I don't drive much at all, I have 16K miles accumulated in the 4.5 years I've had this vehicle. I really want to love this car and own it until 100K but with problems like this I don't think this car will even last another 5 years. I'm thinking of selling this after a few years and getting a Lexus SUV instead. Apparently this battery issue is common in modern Toyotas, particularly sedans. I have other relatives with new Toyotas and they all had to have battery replacement in less than 2 years of ownership. It's a bummer that Toyota QC is going down and they are focusing instead on more technology in the cabin. I can only hope and pray that my car won't quit on me in a dark and empty lot one day.

Adding on to my other entry of problems regarding the battery, I have never had to replace a windshield wiper more often in my life. I am convinced this is an issue with the way the wiper mechanism is manufactured. None of the brand new windshield wipers ever last me 3 months without hearing that dreading squeaking sound. My other relatives who have newer Toyotas never have an issue. Their wiping action is clean and quiet, while mine leaves huge streaks on the windshield no matter what. I've tried cleaning the wiper blades, slightly oiling them, even putting on a tiny bit of lotion. I avoid even using my windshield wipers now in the summer season and instead just resort to cleaning the entire car to improve visibility. The wiper blades continue to make that squealing sound unless it is POURING HEAVILY outside, AKA when there is a lot of water on the windshield. I try to limit the wiper intervals to mitigate the issue but nothing seems to help. Even tried out more expensive and better windshield wiping fluid/blades but they don't do anything. I'm thinking that the wiping mechanism was installed incorrectly and is placing too much pressure on the blades themselves. There is not much that the dealerships/repair shops can do as they are not being recalled at all, they can only tell me that the most I can do is to use them VERY sparingly.

TOYOTA needs to amend their vehicle specs. The actual mileage on the car after my 4.5 years of ownership was TOTALLY different than what was claimed. Upon purchase I was able to achieve 44 mpg, and when fueling completely the remaining distance on the display read about 400 miles. Now I can only achieve 22 mpg and when fueling vehicle completely it now reads 320 miles remaining. This is a LIE and must be admitted by Toyota that it is a grim underestimate. Driver habit has nothing to do with this, I am a very careful (almost slow) driver and the fact that mileage varies this much after a few years of ownership makes no sense. I am dreading the day that this will eventually read 15 mpg on the display. At that point I am definitely selling this car and looking to another brand like Lexus. It is truly ironic how my dad owns a 2015 Tundra that still works like a pro and is able to achieve around 15 mpg consistently even after 7 years of ownership, and my mom's 2019 Sienna is now starting to struggle reaching 17 mpg after just a few years of driving. TOYOTA needs to seriously start concentrating more on vehicle/mechanism reliability instead of trying to install a million safety features (which I find for the most part unnecessary) like every other car manufacturer. What happened to the reliability that was there nearly 10 years ago? It's a shame because I am really trying to love my car and do whatever I can do make sure that it is running smoothly always but my efforts seem to be in vain all the time. My car has other issues as well besides this and at this point it's hard to believe that it will still be functioning great for another 10 years.

During the summer months when temperatures were extreme, my car suddenly had that infamous orange triangle light up and a warning about the tire pressure. I had to avoid taking the freeway home and instead had to take a 30-minute long trek home along the streets. When I went to inspect my tires I saw several large bulges along the sides of multiple tires, especially the front two tires. I immediately took them to the nearest reputable tire shop and they told me that most likely a nail may have caused the issue, but they did not find a single nail nor any holes in the tire that may have been leaking out air. Repair process was difficult as the first tire shop I went to did not carry the tires my car comes with (apparently they are very hard to come across where I live) but offered to replace all tires with used ones for $70 and strongly recommended I get new ones as soon as possible. The second shop told me that I was lucky to spot the issue quickly and seek repair or else the car tires would have exploded while in motion. Whatever manufacturer stock tires Toyota is using should not even be approved at all. Why not use strong, sturdy tires from a reputable brand instead of settling for cheap ones? Since replacing the tires I have had no issues whatsoever.

After 4.5 years of owning and operating this vehicle I have noticed some major issues with headlights. Positioning of headlights is very awkward. I avoid driving at night because of this. Even when headlight setting is on the last position I can hardly see a thing in front of me. I have had other drivers flash their lights on me when approaching from the opposite direction because my lights are apparently too bright, but I am not using high beams. I keep my headlights clean and free of debris but problem is still there. I get that blinding another driver/pedestrian is not safe but I have had many instances of driving at night and larger cars (namely SUVs and pickups) swerve into my lane almost causing an accident because they cannot see my car due to the low placement of my car's headlights. When I do turn on my high beams I can see everything that the normal headlight settings refuse to show, from the stop signs that are several hundred feet away, to pedestrians crossing the street several blocks away. On normal setting I'd be lucky to even spot a pedestrian jaywalking across the street before it's too late. I have driven other sedans before and the difference is quite large, how is it that with older cars I can see more without the high beam setting on but with the 2018 Camry I need to bump it up to high beams just to see better at night? Toyota still has not even fixed this even now with their current Camry lineup. At this point having an SUV/pickup serves to be a great advantage.

After owning this vehicle for almost 4 years, the "Jerky" feeling that other individuals have faced is still there, although not as severe now after I figured workarounds. However I do not like having anyone else in my vehicle as they tend to get visibly uncomfortable once they feel that jerk while the vehicle is in motion. It is nearly impossible to have a smooth transition when the vehicle has to slow down and accelerate immediately. There is almost always a significant 2-3 second delay when you have to accelerate quickly into moving traffic. If I let my foot off the gas while in motion I can feel the gears thud while in motion to accommodate for the loss in speed. Dealerships I've went to have reset the 'software' multiple times and say that the jolts are something I have to get used to and that the car 'learns' from your driving habits. A Toyota dealership rep also told me that Lexus's have this problem too. Clearly this is something that Toyota has not paid attention to since they overhauled and completely redesigned their 2018 lineup. A vehicle is NOT a pet and should not have to be trained. I am unsatisfied with how Toyota does not seem to be addressing this common transmission issue and offering repair services. The only workarounds I have experimented with myself and found some degree of success is 1. turning off eco mode 2. NOT using the cheapest gas (if located in SoCal use #89 when financially able. COSTCO gas seems to deliver good results). 3. fully warming up the car before operating for the first time 4. accelerating gradually (DO NOT STEP ON GAS PEDAL HARD) 5. avoid braking hard (do not tailgate others and allow proper distance between yourself and other drivers) These steps only lessen the severity of the jolts felt but does not totally eliminate them. I don't feel 100% safe while driving this vehicle and am planning on selling it as soon as payments are done.

I am not sure why Toyota decided to set the front bumper quite low compared to other similar sized sedans from different brands out there. In the almost 4 years since I've owned this car I have had multiple scratches and scrapes on the underside of the front bumper; it's ridiculous. A very small dip in the road most of the time leads to scratches which I can feel while driving. The only way to not feel this scraping sound is to approach the dip extremely slow at around 5 mph, which is a safety concern because I don't want anyone ramming into my car from behind. Certain roads I need to pass when I get home have truly terrible construction to the point where I feel like I'm driving my car across a rocky road. I've driven other similar sedans and I don't even feel scraping along the bottom side of the front bumper when approaching a steep dip. I just can't believe how someone in the designs team at Toyota could possibly OK such a poor design. No scratches are visible on my car until you reach the front bumper which is a total disaster. In fact, much of the paint has been scraped off clean and you can see the graphite colored body color.

I bought a 2018 Toyota Camry from auction but when I went for vin number verification by California Highway Patrol, CHP it was discovered that the original tinted windshield does not have space for public view of vin number, which is Toyota original windshield with Toyota logo and stamp. This is factory defect, which I have tried to contact Toyota USA, but it seems Toyota is not responding positively to have the windshield replaced since it does not meet U.S standard. I have case number opened with Toyota case [XXX]. As a result of this I have not been able to register my vehicle. California Highway Patrol, CHP has asked me to go back to Toyota to get this fixed before my vehicle vin could be verified. Vehicle hesitates/jerks at low speeds, rolling stop (low mph) when initially pressing accelerator will jerk/hesitate/take a breath before dropping into gear. This is a KNOWN issue that Toyota has thus far selectively chosen which engine codes they will repair. It is clear, on this website alone, that this issue is universal. Technical Service Bulletin T-SB-0152-19 REV1 should be available to all Toyota Camry owners immediately. This needs to be recalled.

Thank God I was able to stop and not crash. I checked all car stored codes\errors - no codes and the car running normally now. I know that the 2018 Camry had recall about the brake vacuum pump but somehow my car wasn't in a recall list. Thank you

Left rear cross traffic sensor fell into rear bumper (adhesive failure?). This is the second incident. Toyota service manager claims it was knocked into bumper by external force although that is not what happened. The sensor failed when groceries were loaded into trunk during Covid. This is the exact sensor that was repaired by the service department previously claiming it was due to adhesive failure. There is no way to disable the sensor failure alarm on the dashboard display so there is a constant rear sensor failure alarm blinking constantly on the dashboard which is annoying.

I was going home from Houston to Richmond Texas but a few minutes into driving some warning lights came on and a warning message says Secondary Brake System malfunction. Then all of a sudden the steering wheel was almost locked and was very hard to maneuver. But due to safety of where I was driving I tried hard to reach a Toyota service center nearby which was about to close so I decided to drive to another one nearby my home. A week or so later they said the car was inspected and repaired but on my way home after picking up the car I had to return it again and since then which has been approximately a month now the car is still in service waiting for parts. The safety of others and mine was at risk as the steering wheel was very tough to maneuver. The problem was confirmed by the dealer. The vehicle component was inspected by Toyota service worker and they said they also had it checked by the manufacturer personnel. There were no prior warning or symptoms prior to this incident which happened on May 24, 2021.

UPON TURNING ON THE CAR THE CLIMATE CONTROL UNIT WILL NOT TURN IN. THIS HAS CAUSED THE UNIT TO COMPLETELY NOT WORK AS I CANNOT ADJUST ANYTHING OR TURN IT ON. THERE ARE NO LIGHTS, NO AIR, NO RESPONSE. TURNING THE CAR OFF AND ON AGAIN DOES NOT REMEDY THE SITUATION. I HAVE HAD THE UNIT REPLACED ONCE ALREADY AND BARELY FOUR MONTHS LATER THE ISSUE BEGAN AGAIN.

I WAS ABLE TO FIX THE ISSUE OF THE VEHICLE NOT RESPONDING WELL TO BURSTS OF SPEED, SIMPLY TURN OFF ECO MODE, AND REFILL VEHICLE WITH BETTER GAS (DO NOT USE THE CHEAPEST TIER OF GAS AVAILABLE AT THE GAS STATION, GO THE NEXT TIER UP FROM THAT). I HAVE OWNED THIS VEHICLE FOR 3 YEARS NOW WITH UNDER 13,800 MI AT TIME OF WRITING. THERE ARE STEERING ISSUES WHEN TRAVELING AT HIGH SPEEDS. I SHARE THIS VEHICLE WITH OTHER INDIVIDUALS AND ALL OF THEM COMPLAIN OF THE VEHICLE SHAKING SEVERELY WHEN TRAVELING AT HIGH SPEEDS. STEERING WHEEL FREQUENTLY SEEMS TO "LOCK" IN PLACE WHEN DRIVING CURVES. THE RECALL THAT IS CURRENTLY IN PLACE, 20V682, HAS BEEN EFFECTIVE SINCE LATE OCTOBER 2020 AND AS OF NOW THERE IS NO REMEDY AVAILABLE. I SPOKE TO A TOYOTA REP EARLY FEBRUARY AND THEY WERE ANTICIPATING A REMEDY TO BE AVAILABLE BY THE END OF THE MONTH BUT THERE IS NO REMEDY AVAILABLE. TRIED CALLING AGAIN AND THIS TIME THEY WERE UNABLE TO GIVE ME AN EXACT DATE FOR THE REMEDY TO BE READY. MEANWHILE I AM READING MORE AND MORE COMPLAINTS OF OTHER DRIVERS WITH THE SAME VEHICLE STALLING WHILE IN MOTION, ENDANGERING NOT JUST THEIR OWN LIVES BUT THE LIVES OF OTHER DRIVERS AND PASSENGERS AS WELL. THE LAST THING I WANT IS FOR ME OR MY OWN FAMILY MEMBERS TO BE IN A SEVERE ACCIDENT AND POSSIBLY LOSE OUR LIVES. IT IS IRRESPONSIBLE FOR TOYOTA TO KEEP US ALL WAITING FOR SUCH A LONG TIME FOR A REMEDY. THERE SEEM TO BE MORE AND MORE RECALLS AFFECTING ALL TOYOTA BRANDED VEHICLES DUE TO POOR QC. IF THEY COULD ONLY TAKE THE TIME TO PROPERLY TEST ALL PRODUCTS BEFORE RELEASE THEM TO THE PUBLIC, WE WOULD NOT HAVE TO DRIVE IN OUR VEHICLES FEELING ON EDGE AND UNCOMFORTABLE ALL THE TIME. IF THESE RECALLS KEEP COMING I AM SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING SELLING THE VEHICLE ONCE MY PAYMENTS ARE DONE IN 3 YEARS, AND CONSIDER LOOKING ELSEWHERE FOR BRANDS WHO VALUE SAFETY INSTEAD OF ADDING MORE TECH GADGETS TO HIKE UP PRICES.
